Merry Christmas from WIPP!

Thank you for helping to make our Christmas program and Cookie Share such a success. We had some leftover cookies which we plated and delivered to People Helping People of Savannah for their lunch yesterday in Forsyth Park. (Each Sunday in Forsyth Park they offer lunch and blessings to those in need.)

When we return to school in January (Classes resume Wednesday, January 3rd.) we'll begin registration for next year. We send home forms with our current students first and then open registration to new families. Some of our classes fill up quickly so make sure you return your form/registration fee quickly.

We know that some of our 3s will be putting their names in the public schools' PK lottery. Because that isn't usually held until late March/early April, we ask that you send in just the registration form if WIPP is your “back-up plan” then pay the registration fee once you know your child's status for the public schools.

For any additional information over break, please check the blog. If you haven't sent me your Christmas cookie recipes yet, email them to wipp450@gmail.com. I'll try and get those up on the blog before Christmas in case you're looking for a cooking project to do with the little ones while they're home!

Christmas Week at WIPP

We sent out an email today with this information, but just in case...

Just a few reminders with all of our Christmas stuff going on this week!

*Our class Christmas parties will be held on Wednesday 12/13 or Thursday 12/14, depending on attendance days.  Check with your child's teacher for more information.

*Our last practice for the Christmas program is this Wednesday!  I've attached a few mp3s of the songs being sung this year--and there will be some practice pictures on the blog later today.   Don't forget to take a look at your child's classroom blog.  It's a great way to see some of the highlights of what's going on in the classroom each week.

*On Friday, our 2s are the only classes that do carpool.  We ask that our 2s start carpool in the back parking lot at 8:35 so we can be finished by 8:50.  At that time, we'll open the building doors so that the rest of our students can be walked in by their parents.  The Sanctuary doors will be opened at 8:30 and the program will start promptly at 9:15.
For our whole school performances, classes will be in the same positions they were for the Thanksgiving program. The 4s will be on the left side of the altar, then Mrs. Knudsen's class in center left, Miss Didi's class center right, and Mrs. Heebner's class on the right.  When the 2s come in, Miss Jaycie's class will be on left, Mrs. Anderson's class in the middle, and Miss Emily's class on the right.  The program lasts about 40 minutes.

*Our Christmas cookies have started to arrive!  After our Christmas program, everyone is invited to stop back at Fellowship Hall for some cookies and milk (or punch!)  We will have store-bought cookies available, but we ask that each family send in a dozen home-made cookies along with the recipe to help fancy things up!  You can send these in any time this week--or drop them off before the program on Friday.  We'll share the recipes on the blog after the holidays.

*Last but not least, here's a quick health update...We've had isolated cases of strep, the stomach bug, and respiratory/ear infections throughout the building, but no major outbreaks.  We've got our fingers crossed that everyone remains healthy through the Christmas holidays and into the New Year!

December Information

Below you'll find a copy of the paper note sent home last week.  In addition to this note, each family should have received a recipe booklet with some of last year's favorite Cookie Share recipes printed out.  We hope that you'll join us after the Christmas program for cookies and punch (or milk or water!)  We invite you to share a plate of your family's favorite holiday cookies (along with the recipe for our Cookie Share booklet) to help make the morning even more special.

WIPC Women's Bible Study

Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church invites you to a new study for women while your child attends WIPP

Our Tuesday morning a community group will be exploring Twelve More Women of the Bible  a  DVD-based study.
Each week's discussion stands alone so you can join us at any time. No advanced preparation is required and you need not have ever gone to a Bible study before to be made welcome with us!
We encourage you to be part of the conversation, as together we seek to ignite enthusiasm and strength in our adult faith journeys alongside other women!
We will meet from 9:00 to 10:30 on Tuesday mornings in the Fellowship Hall building beginning December 5th.  Childcare is provided for children too young for preschool.

Contact Marty Susie (897-1840 ext 202) for more information. No need to RSVP—just come!

WIPP Email Update 11/18

Thank you to everyone who helped to make our Thanksgiving program a success! The kids were adorable!

I'll be sending out a December update after Thanksgiving break, but just so you can get some dates on your calendar, here's a little bit of info:
  • Christmas program: Friday, December 15th, 9:15. All of our children will participate in the performance. We ask that all of our students dress in nice holiday clothes. After the program, everyone is invited back to Fellowship Hall for cookies and punch. We'd like to continue our annual school-wide recipe exchange so we ask that as your family does your holiday baking this year, you make an extra dozen of your favorite cookies to send to school (along with one copy of the recipe) for our program. We'll be sending home a booklet with last year's cookie recipes to inspire you right after Thanksgiving break.
  • Christmas break: Monday, December 18th through Tuesday, January 2nd Classes resume Wednesday, January 3rd!
  • No School: Monday, January 15th MLK Holiday

Almost!

Tomorrow is our Thanksgiving program! We can't wait to see you!
  • 3s & 4s: Please bring your child to the classroom between 8:45-9:00 before heading over to the Sanctuary to get a seat.
  • 2s: Please use the back for regular carpool between 8:35 and 8:50 then park in the front and come into the Sanctuary.
  • The program lasts about 35-40 minutes.
  • This isn't a normal day for us. There will be NO Early Birds or Lunch Bunch. Children will be dismissed immediately following the program. Everyone is invited to join us in Fellowship Hall after the program for light refreshments.
  • We have off all next week for Thanksgiving Break!

I'll remind everyone before the program starts where the best seats are to see your child's class, but here's where everyone will be:
  • Miss Heather's class starts on the far left.
  • Miss Deborah's class will be right next to them at center left.
  • Mrs. Knudsen's class will be in the middle/left.
  • Miss Did's class will be middle/right.
  • Mrs. Heebner's class will on the right.
  • The 2s come in and join us for the last three songs of the program with Miss Jaycie's class on the left in front of the 4s, Mrs. Anderson's class in the middle, and Miss Emily's class on the right in front of the 3s.

Some of you have asked about what kind of clothes your child should wear. Below are pictures from last year's program showing our Pilgrims (Mrs. Knudsen class and the 4s) and Native Americans (the 2s, Mrs. Heebner, and Miss Didi's classes.) Some of our Native American costumes (especially for the little kids) are shorter than the one's in the picture--more hip length so they don't fall!

Week of November 13th

We've sent home paper notes and an email with this information--here's another version on the blog!

Second Harvest will be coming to pick up our boxes tomorrow. Thanks for your generosity! If you've still got something left to donate, you can send it in tomorrow morning.

As the weather changes (finally!) keep your eyes open for a note from your child's teacher asking you to switch out the extra clothes we keep in our ziploc bags for cooler weather clothes.

This Friday is our Thanksgiving program. I'll send another email later this week with reminders and information on where to sit to have the best view of your child, but the basic information is:

Parent Update

In case you missed the email sent out on Tuesday 11/8:

Unfortunately this week seems to have unleashed the illnesses at WIPP! We've had multiple cases of respiratory infections (usually with low-grade fevers and coughs), a couple of cases of strep, and several confirmed cases of the flu. Thanks for keeping us updated.

We're collecting canned/dry goods for Second Harvest through Friday. Thanks to those of you who've already sent in food for those less fortunate.

Come join us at the Wilmington Island Farmers' market this Saturday at 10:00 for Storytime. I'll be there with some Thanksgiving books--and singing some of the songs from our Thanksgiving program. We'd love to have the kids come help us out with our singing!

This Friday is the last day to order school photos.

Happy November!

Thanks to everyone who sent in unwanted Halloween candy to be sent to our troops through Operation Gratitude. We dropped it all off at Dogwood Pediatric Dentistry on Friday afternoon. They are continuing their collection for the next couple of weeks, so if you still have some to drop off you can visit them at 4849 Paulsen Street. Thanks to the staff there for organizing this!

This week we'll start collecting canned/dry food for a Thanksgiving donation to Second Harvest. All week long you can send in non-perishable food items to be shared with families who are less fortunate.

Also this Friday, November 10th, is the last day to order school pictures from AdLib photography. Directions on ordering are in an attachment sent out in an email to parents on 11/5. If you go to adlibphotography.pixieset.com and scroll down to the WIPP photos.  You can probably figure it out from there! :)

Don't forget to put our Thanksgiving program on your calendar--next Friday, November 17th, at 9:15! Remember this isn't a regular school day for us. Children are dismissed after the program with their parents and everyone is invited to join us at Fellowship Hall for light refreshments. There will be more information on where to park, where to sit, etc., coming home next week. We've started practicing our songs and finding our places in the Sanctuary. The kids really are adorable! I'll try to take some pictures at this week's practice so you can see us in action.

Happy Halloween!

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Halloween celebration a success!  From our special crafts, costume parade, visit to Summer Breeze, and wonderful parties--the kids had a blast!

We'll collect Halloween candy again tomorrow (11/3) to drop off at Dogwood Pediatric Dentistry for Operation Gratitude.  If you have extra candy that you want to donate to our troops, make sure you send it in!

Email Update--and Pirate Ship Visit!

We have our class Halloween parties this Monday and Tuesday.
  • Monday: Miss Didi's class, Mrs. Heebner's class, and Mrs. Anderson's class
  • Tuesday: Miss Heather's class, Miss Deborah's class, Mrs. Knudsen's class, Miss Emily's class, and Miss Jaycie's class
Our parties usually start between 11:00 and 11:15. (Check with your child's teacher if you're not sure of the time.) Everyone is invited to attend--we love company! We ask that you park in a marked space in the front parking lot because we do still have carpool on party days! We try to finish up by 11:35, so we can get all of our guests out before carpool starts.

Our school will be collecting unwanted/extra Halloween candy again this year to donate to the troops through Operation Gratitude. If you would like to contribute any wrapped candy, just send/bring it in on Wednesday 11/1 or Thursday 11/2. We'll drop off everything on Friday to be mailed off.

Starting the week of November 6th, we'll be collecting canned/boxed goods to donate to Second Harvest for their Thanksgiving food drive. We'll send more information home on that this week.

We've been relatively lucky so far this year with illnesses at school. We've had a couple of cases of the stomach bug, some kids out with the respiratory infection that's going around, and a few isolated cases of strep. Below is a recap of the preschool health guidelines from the handbook. Please make sure we have a phone number for you where we can always reach you or an emergency contact if your child gets sick. It's distressing when we have a little one who doesn't feel well and is tearful, asking for mommy or daddy, and we we can't get a hold of anyone. If your contact information changes, please let the office and your child's teacher know so we can update everything. We also appreciate the heads up on any illnesses your child has so we can stay on top of things!

For the health and well-being of your child and of others at school, please keep your child home for the following reasons:
  1. Fatigue (for any reason), lethargic behavior
  2. A fever (a child should remain at home for 24 hours AFTER the fever is gone and/or until prescribed antibiotics have been administered for 24 hours)
  3. Sore throat
  4. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (child should remain home for 24 hours after the last episode)
  5. Red, crusty, or itchy eyes (conjunctivitis or pink eye is very contagious). The child must be kept at home for 48 hours while being treated with antibiotics and should only return to school if there is no discharge from the eyes.
  6. A runny nose if there is colored nasal mucus**
A parent or person on the emergency contact list must always be available by phone during school hours. It is the parent’s responsibility to have someone available who can come to the school for emergencies or for a sick child.

**Yellow or green mucus is often a sign of an infection. If we notice this in your child, especially if it's accompanied by other symptoms, we will call and ask you to pick him/her up in an attempt to keep illnesses at a minimum in the classroom. At this age, many of our students are still learning to cough into their elbows, use a tissue to blow their noses, and keep things out of their mouths. We need all of the help we can get to keep everyone well!

Thanks to the Martorells (Ultimate Martial Arts Studio) for bringing their pirate ship (and pirate!) to visit us on Friday!
